U50

BUDGET-LIMITED
CONSTRUCTED MTG

A LIVING FORMAT

Let's say it, 50% (or more for some people) of the fun in MTG comes from deckbuilding, however netdecking and conformity are unfortunately the bitter reality of those internet 2.0 days.

Some cool projects like Ancient and Premodern formats, aimed to bring back the semi-empiric old feeling of building/playing MTG, but a fixed card pool could only lead to a stagnation even with the seasonal banlist updates to ensure balancement.

Nowadays even pauper and peasant (the direct parents of U50) are heavily constricted by archetype conformity and netdecking and in some cases they could be not properly "budget" decks, but the U50 project aims to revolutionize all that.

U50 is a fixed-budget constructed format based on Legacy cardpool/banlist. The concept behind its conception is (beside a new deckbuilding challenge) using the inherent self regulating nature of card prices as power level balancement from deck to deck and restriction element to overpowered/overused cards.

Being able to source from all the mtg sets and growing with future expansion ensures the longevity of this format, while adhering to the Legacy Banlist ensures that the low-cost/high-powered cards stays out of the cardpool without any questioning. In the meanwhile prices ups and downs will slightly hinder in time tier 0 or tier 1 decks while promoting the lower tier's decks and the use of low-budget cards in place of the "staples".

U50, as you can now guess, stays for Under 50 (Dollars), so this new format will be friendly towards both new or returning players and basically cost-free for old time players and isn't a money-hole like Standard or MTGArena.

Thus, recap: Legacy Banlist, current MTG rules, maximum 49.99$ budget calculated on MTGGoldfish's deckpricer (until a better solution arises). The decks could have 60+ main cards or 60+ main and a 15 card sideboard (obligatory with "wishes" cards), the 49,99$ Budget includes the sideboard.

RESOURCES

PRICING AND DECKBUILDING COMPANION

I reccomend the use of MTGGoldfish and his deckbuilder (Tools > My Decks / Deckpriecer) to practice have always the overall cost of the deck under control. Prices are in real time, so be a little conservative. Waiting for a definitive standard for the pricing of decks, i would relay to the MTG prices for now.

An alternative with more interactive deckbuilding features is Deckstats, with mana curves, probability and a shuffler

CARD RESEARCH

Hier of Magiccars, Scryfall is the best search engine from your Phone, Tablet or PC.  Known by most, some newcomer could be intimidated by the numbers of the collection. Know no fear, learn the search Syntax and go fearlessly deep in the rabbit hole. Scryfall retains also info on pricing and card legality, a truly catch-all solution.

DECK INSPIRATION

Even if this format is openly against to netdecking, TC-Decks is undoubtedly a good place to start thinking about one's deck archetype, staples, deck compositions and so on.

In addition there is a small selection of sample decks on MTGGoldfish.

PLAY ONLINE

To betatest your creation i think that Cockatrice is the best hassle-free virtual tabletop program to date. Auto cards download, auto updates, easy search engine and deck dropping from clipboard. As an alternative, without any installs, the Untap web inteface comes to the rescue.

Otherwise, for a more structured play with enforced rulings there is XMage (free to play, but Java) or the classic MTGO.
